Letter from Daniel Pink

Curtis --

Thanks for the very nice note. I'm grateful you came out for the lecture yesterday -- and I'm delighted you enjoyed it. Wonderful to hear.

Kids like getting stuff, huh? Amazing. I wonder if the principal ever thought that kids like learning stuff, too.

Glad you landed at Montessori. They were doing Motivation 3.0 before anybody. In fact, I write a bit about their approach in the new book, the one I kinda, sorta previewed at Chautauqua.

Thanks again for the kind words. Good luck in your good work.

Cheers,
Dan

Dear Mr. Pink,
Today, I had the pleasure to hear you speak at the Chautauqua Institution. Thank you so much for what you had to say; for six years I worked in a school whose main form of classroom management was (and continues to be) extrinsic motivation. In the principal's words "kids like getting stuff." It never seemed right. I no longer work at that school and now I am a Montessori. Philosophically, the three ideas ideas behind "motivation 3.0" are what authentic Montessori education is all about. We teach our students to be autonomous, masterful, and purposeful. Daily, we try to show them that intrinsic motivation is the key to their success.
I have said it today multiple times, listening to you speak with such conviction on the topic was akin to a religious revival. It affirmed within me that this is right.
Thank you so much,
Curtis Romey
